Scholarships and Criteria

The Community Scholarship Program is active from November through June each school year. The information contained on this page is NOT to be considered current at any other time.

The Foundation administers separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program. Eligibility, criteria, and supplemental requirements are different for each scholarship. Zack Arnold Memorial Scholarship
Annual renewable scholarship created by Brian L. Arnold in memory of his son.


Eligibility Criteria
:
Graduating seniors of any Knox County high school who have been a member of the high school golf team for at least two years. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 (4.0 scale) and plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States.

Selection Criteria:  Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the letters of recommendation.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Two letters of recommendation - one from applicant's golf coach or his or her school's athletic director and the other from someone unrelated to the applicant and who is not a Community Foundation board member but who can attest to applicant's character and fortitude.
2.  Official grade transcript. 
3.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Award Amount: $1,500.

Renewal Details: May be renewable for consecutive sophomore, junior, and senior years provided recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in college. Click here for renewal application.


Heather Bird Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Robert H. Bird in memory of his daughter.


Eligibility Criteria:
Active members of the Vincennes Township Fire Department with at least one year of service and their spouses who have a high school diploma or GED certificate or children of active members who are graduating high school seniors. Applicants must have a letter grade average of C or above upon high school graduation or completion of the GED program and be planning to attend a two- or four-year degree-granting institution. Please note that active member status will be determined by the Vincennes Township Fire Department.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on the number and types of certifications achieved through the fire department, involvement and/or leadership in community service, and information contained in the required essay. 

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Listing of all certifications achieved through the Vincennes Township Fire Department, including the type of certification and the year it was achieved.
2.  Essay (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) describing applicant's merits, his or her plans for use of the scholarship, and need.
3.  Official grade transcript.
4.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Persis McClure Hurst Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Sarah H. Keller in memory of her mother.


Eligibility Criteria:
Graduating seniors of any Knox County high school planning to attend an Indiana college or university. Applicants must demonstrate interest in English or history or plan to pursue a major in English or history.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Two letters of recommendation - one from a school official and the other from someone who is unrelated to the applicant and who is not a Community Foundation board member but can attest to applicant's school and community service activities.
2.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
3. Official grade transcript.
4.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

McKinley Avenue Presbyterian Church Student Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the McKinley Avenue Presbyterian Church Student Scholarship Fund Committee.


Eligibility Criteria:
Graduating seniors of any Knox County high school pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited college or university. Applicants must demonstrate great financial need.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on financial need, academic performance, school and extracurricular activities, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
2.  Completion of the "FAFSA4caster" and submission of your "FAFSA4caster" information sheet (FAFSA4caster Step 6) and the Estimated Federal Student Aid Eligibility report (FAFSA4caster Step 8).  To access the FAFSA4caster on-line early Expected Family Contribution estimator, visit the United States Department of Education website at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/

Robert W. Nordhorn Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Marcia A. Nordhorn in memory of her husband.


Eligibility Criteria:
Graduating seniors of Vincennes Lincoln High School enrolled in related arts/technical theater, chorus or band who have participated in high school theatrical/musical productions; however, preference will be given to related arts/technical theater students. Applicants must be planning to attend a two- or four-year college, university, or vocational school.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on financial need and level of involvement in theatrical productions, with the required essay considered secondary to all other criteria.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (typewritten essay of a maximum of 200 words).
2.  Letter of recommendation from someone who is unrelated to the applicant and who is not a school official or a Community Foundation board member but can attest to applicant's theatrical, school and community service activities.

Velma and Herbert Pepmeier Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria
:
Graduating high school senior who is affiliated with St. John's United Church of Christ in Vincennes or Bethel Church in Freelandville.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on applicant's success in overcoming difficult circumstances, a history of working hard to achieve aspirations and goals, and on financial need.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Perseverance (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) describing the challenges faced in order to pursue past and/or future aspirations and goals.
2.  Two letters of recommendation from individuals unrelated to the applicant and who are not Community Foundation board members - that support the applicant's ability to overcome challenges and obstacles.
3.  Completion of the "FAFSA4caster" and submission of your "FAFSA4caster" information sheet (FAFSA4caster Step 6) and the Estimated Federal Student Aid Eligibility report (FAFSA4caster Step 8).  To access the FAFSA4caster on-line early Expected Family Contribution estimator, visit the United States Department of Education website at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/

Schott North America Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Schott North America, Inc. to encourage the children of Schott North America, Inc. or Gemtron Corporation employees to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential.


Eligibility Criteria
:
High school graduates or graduating high school seniors who are the natural, adopted or step-children of employees of Schott North America, Inc. or Gemtron Corporation facilities located in Knox County, Indiana.  Applicants must be enrolled or have applied for enrollment at any accredited college, university or technical/vocational school and planning to pursue a degree in business, engineering, environment, finance, general studies, law/legal studies, medicine/healthcare, sales/marketing, or science.  Graduating high school seniors or high school graduates who have not previously attended an institution of higher education must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) from his or her high school coursework.  High school graduates who are currently enrolled in or have previously attended an institution of higher education must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) from his or her college coursework.

Selection Criteria:  Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the supplemental requirements. 

Supplemental Requirements: 
1.  Written statement (250 words or less) describing applicant's past and/or current community involvement/volunteerism and how the experience has influenced his or her life. 

2.  One letter of recommendation from an individual who is unrelated to the applicant attesting to applicant's moral character and leadership skills and abilities.  (Letters of recommendation cannot be obtained from members of the Knox County Community Foundation Board of Trustees or from owners, managers, or employees of Schott North America, Inc./Gemtron Corporation.)
